Forklifts, Reach Trucks and Aisles

A sit-down counterbalanced forklift carries a counterweight behind the operator and approaches the pallet from the front. It is versatile for docks, trailers, staging and general pallet movement. Its chassis and turning geometry normally require wider aisles than warehouse reach equipment.

A stand-up reach truck has a compact chassis and a mechanism that reaches the forks into the rack. It is commonly used indoors with selective and double-deep rack. The smaller turning radius can support narrower aisles and higher storage than many sit-down counterbalanced forklifts.

Narrow-aisle equipment is designed to operate in tighter rack aisles. Very-narrow-aisle systems may use turret trucks, high-level order pickers or specialized articulated trucks. The equipment choice affects rack spacing, floor requirements, operator controls, guidance, fire protection and throughput.

Some VNA systems use an embedded guidance wire. Others use guide rails or another manufacturer-approved navigation method. The requirement depends on the truck, aisle width, operating height and system design. Confirm guidance requirements before finalizing the rack or cutting the slab.

There is no single correct aisle width. The calculation uses the actual truck's right-angle stacking requirement, pallet and load dimensions, turning behavior, rack clearances and operating allowance. Use the selected equipment manufacturer's data rather than a generic forklift category.

Yes, provided the truck can safely serve the planned load, aisle and storage height. Verify lift height, lowered mast height, right-angle stacking dimension, load center, capacity at elevation, turning radius and battery or fuel requirements. The model number alone may not identify every relevant configuration.

The truck becomes less stable as the load is raised and as the effective load center moves forward. Attachments, long loads and reach mechanisms can reduce available capacity further. Use the truck's data plate and manufacturer information for the actual mast, attachment, height and load center.

Walkie pallet jacks can move pallets through suitable aisles and staging areas, but they do not normally place pallets on elevated beam levels. Rider pallet jacks require additional operating and turning space. Their route should be coordinated with pedestrians, lift trucks and rack-end protection.

Employers must train and evaluate powered industrial truck operators for the equipment and workplace involved. OSHA requires an operator-performance evaluation at least once every three years, with refresher training triggered by specified events such as unsafe operation, an accident or assignment to a different truck type.
